There are a lot of people out there wanting to get solar panels and/or solar water heaters for their homes or businesses. If you’re one of them you know how frustrating it is when looking for solar panel financing.
Unfortunately there’s still this huge gap between the consumer and the solar companies. Its difficult to find information on solar panels in general, and its even more difficult to find information about solar loans.
So I’ve put together a list of the top places to find a solar panel loan. This list includes private nationwide lenders, such as banks, and also includes government loans and incentive programs that can be found within your state.
Nationwide Solar Panel Loans
Meridith Capital Group/SunWize
Sharp – Citigroup Solar Loan Program
Wells Fargo Solar Rebate Program
FHA Energy Efficient Mortgages
ResNet Energy Improvement Mortgages
HUD Energy Efficient Mortgages
Federal and State Solar Loan and Incentive Programs
Database Of Incentives For Renewables & Efficiency
Click on your state for solar loans and incentive programs for your local area. Some states offer loans with low or 0% interest rates!
U.S. Department Of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Program
Glossary of state and federal incentive programs as well as general information on solar financing.
CalFinder Solar Loan List
For Residents of California, Washington, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New York, Oregon, Orlando Florida, and Vermont
I will be adding to this list when I find more solar financing resources. And hopefully, soon we’ll all be able to take advantage of solar leasing options through companies like SolarCity (Currently available in only a few states.)

A solar power purchase agreement (PPA) is another financing-like vehicle. It’s been used by businesses a lot in the past but hasn’t been available to homeowners until now. Here’s a bit more info: http://tinyurl.com/5onq5e

Hi Sydney!
Thanks so much for stopping by and for leaving the information about solar power purchase agreements (PPA). That’s great news that those financing options are now available to residents.
And yes, the more options people have, the more affordable solar becomes, the better off we all are.
Thanks,
Gina

Great list. I’m curious if people are typically able to get terms where the monthly cost is close to, or lower than the savings they net from the panels.

Cool article. PG&E (In California) once did a zero interest loan program to get people to insulate their homes. Hopefully some of these programs are similar, or better.

Is there financing for non-profits like churches ?
Right now in California there is state credits , no federal credits like homeowners get.
I also heard the new stimulus planmay have grants for PV panels purchasers. Does anyone know about this ?

Anything that promotes the adoption of solar energy should be applauded.
Leasing is one option that makes sense for some homeowners, but it has some drawbacks. Notably, the savings are not as great as other purchase methods, there could be balloon payments, it requires a very high FICO, and there could be complications upon sales of the property. If you are worried about the upfront cost for solar panels, there are many financing programs available to homeowners with good credit. Some loans are tax-deductible too. Buying the system outright will generate the greatest savings.
To learn more about solar financing, costs, savings benefits and financing , then visit FreeCleanSolar.com. You can also search a nationwide network of 300 local solar installers and find information about state solar rebates and federal tax credits. The bottom line is that many homeowners and business owners can afford and save with solar power today.
