7 Ways to Save Money on Gas Right Now

  • 7 Ways to Save Money on Gas Right Now

In many parts of the country the price for a gallon of gas has reached $4 per gallon…yikes! So I’ve compiled a list of 7 easy tips that you can implement every day to actually see a reduction in the money you spend at the pump.

And over the weekend, my fiancé and I put these tips to the test, and they worked like a charm.

We had to make a 400 mile round trip journey (we’re on a quest to find the perfect place for our wedding). We drove along the highway the whole time and followed all 7 gas saving tips below. And, we even had the air conditioning running the whole time, which by the way, has about the same effect on your fuel economy as leaving the windows open. Either way you lose about 1 mpg.

So after making this trip in the heat of Arizona, we calculated our actual real-world mpg usage based on miles driven and gas used. And we’re happy to report our actual fuel economy on the highway was 40 mpg.

Now that’s awesome as is, but what makes it even better is that according to the manufacturer, our Honda Civic should get 34 mpg highway. So we did even better than expected just by changing a few driving habits.

Ok ok, you probably want to know what tips we followed…

    1. Drive the speed limit

    2. Accelerate slowly

    3. Go easy on the brakes

    4. Make sure your tire pressure is set at the manufacturer’s recommended pressure

    5. Avoid idling (shut your vehicle off if you’ll be idling for more than 30 seconds)

    6. Do not buy premium fuel

    7. Eliminate unnecessary drag (i.e. items on your roof, trailers, campers, etc.)

Probably the best tip of all however, is to just try to drive as little as possible. Now I know this probably seems incredibly obvious, but sometimes you have to just be aware of your habits in order to change them.

So some things you can do to save even more money on gas are running your errands all in one trip, walking, bicycling, taking public transportation, carpooling, and just staying home instead of going out all the time for entertainment.
