Buying hybrid cars and installing solar panels are great ways to help save energy, but not an option for everyone who wants to do their part in the “green†movement. Try these simple tips to help protect the environment while also saving you some cash.
1.) Lose the water bottles. An estimated 3 million plastic bottles are thrown away every day. Buy a water filter or purifier for your home and take a filled reusable bottle with you to the gym, to work, or in the car.
2.) Reusable grocery bags are now available in all major supermarkets. Disposable plastic grocery bags clog landfills at a rate of several million per day. This goes for sandwich bags too. When packing a lunch for work or school, replace the plastic sandwich bags with a reusable container.
3.) Install a low-flow shower head and cut your showers down by two or three minutes. Annually, this will save thousands of gallons of water per household. Air out your bath towels and use them twice, at least, before washing them.
4.) Install a laundry line. Why waste energy, and money, using the clothes dryer when the sun and fresh air will dry your clothes for free.
5.) Use environmentally friendly cleaning products. Most major supermarkets now carry competitive “green†brands. Vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and plain old-fashioned soap and hot water work wonders as cleaners and are inexpensive alternatives.
6.) Change your light bulbs. Using low energy compact fluorescent bulbs will save energy. Use a frosted glass shade over fluorescent bulbs for a brighter room.
7.) Turn it off! Get in the habit of turning off the lights, computer and all electronics when not in use. That goes for the car too; idling uses gas and gets you zero miles to the gallon.

Wow I am looking for ways to go green and already doing several things I didn’t realize helped. I absolutely DESPISE bottles. We don’t have a plastic recycling center in this area so it drives me crazy to see people using them. I actually have all my friends and relatives keep their walmart, grocery etc plastic bags and I take them all into walmart and put them in their recycling bins. 4 times a year I take all our old clothes to a SOS for people to ‘recycle’ them and I never idle my car. We use low energy light bulbs too. I’m doing more than I thought. Great article!

I realized that doing green is really enjoyable. I can say that I am doing it since when I’m in high school but I have no idea that it has a great outcome, not only to our family but to our Mother Earth as well. I’m glad. So, let’s support and continue doing green things this year such as use an eco-friendly products like stainless steel containers for our packed lunch. We should go for reusable, and earth-friendly stuffs because that is cheaper and reliable.
