Where to Find Organic Tea in Bulk, Loose, or Just by the Bag

I’m totally obsessed with tea. And actually the only beverages I drink are either tea or water. So I’m always on the lookout for delicious new tea blends and companies that supply organic versions of my favorite refreshment.

While recently searching for companies that sold organic teas, I noticed online that there are a lot of people looking for the best places to order organic teas online, especially in bulk. So I thought I’d do some research and share with you what I found. I certainly had a lot of fun in the process (Hmmm, maybe I like tea a little too much? haha)

Anyways, while looking through pages of information about tea companies, I realized that there’s really not that many that offer organic, fair-trade teas. For some reason I expected there to be many more than I found, but no such luck.

However, I did find one company in particular that really stuck out in terms of tea quality, tea assortment, and mission statement.  The Numi Organic Tea Company is absolutely my favorite.

For me, its not just about the tea.  Yes, I want delicious blends and a variety of options, but I also want to support a company that’s mission embodies environmental responsibility.  Numi definitely fits the bill.

Here’s some cool facts about the company (then I’ll get into the organic tea I promise!)…

From Numi Organic Tea ‘The Purest Tea on the Planet’

We strive to have a positive impact on our global community and partner with tea gardens committed to Organic and Fair Labor Practices. This guarantees that workers receive a fair wage and safe working conditions leading to an improved quality of life. We also work with local organizations that employ adults with disabilities, turning disabilities into possibilities.

Numi Organic Tea is a leader in the natural & specialty tea category, committed to global consciousness and sustainability in its packaging and business practices. By supporting organic agriculture, paying an above average wage and buying tea through fair trade co-ops, Numi’s organic tea business has provided health care, free housing or land on which to build and farm as well as a chemical and pesticide-free work environment.

As Numi is an organic tea company, all raw tea and herb materials are 100% biodegradable. All materials are fully utilized in the production process and are transported in reusable cardboard cartons. Numi recycles all plastic wrap, cardboard and wood materials that are used in conjunction with the transportation and storage of products. Furthermore, there are no byproducts or waste generated in the production process. Numi is constantly examining ways to reduce waste in production and operating processes.

Ok ok, on to the tea…

Numi has a large variety of options with a variety of teas available in either tea bags, in bulk, or in small loose leave packets.  There are also many gifts for tea lovers, wholesale options, and even the infamous ‘flowering tea.’

Loose Tea in Bulk (available in 4 oz or 16 oz bags):

Watching Rhino Rescue from the National Geographic Channel

[Black Rhino - Photo credit: NeilsPhotography]

Right now I’m watching a new show from the National Geographic Channel called ‘Rhino Rescue.’ I’m always so impressed by the National Geographic Society and this documentary does nothing short of amaze.

I thought most of you would love the show too so I found some video clips courtesy of Nat Geo TV.

I couldn’t find when the next showing was, so be sure to look out for it.

Enjoy…

The New Green and Cage-Free Humane Society Silicon Valley!

Humane Society of Silicon Valley.  Its so different and conceptually amazing that I’m definitely going to have to make a special trip to see it sometime very soon.

Community Dog Park

HSSV Community Dog Park

What’s so special about it? Well for starters its one of the first environmentally certified “Green” Animal Community Centers in the U.S. to offer a completely cage-free setting along with doggie day care and loads of pet services as well.

“We wanted to make Humane Society Silicon Valley not only the best place to adopt a pet, but the best place to learn about, engage with, and celebrate animals,” says HSSV President Christine Benninger. “With our enlightened architecture and design, and home-like habitats for animals awaiting adoption, our center offers a healthy, friendly and comfortable environment for both people and pets that we believe will change the way people view animals, treat animals, and live with animals. Once people visit our new center, they’ll realize it’s so much more than an animal shelter. That’s why we’re calling it an Animal Community Center.”

On 5 acres of land, this 48,000 square-foot animal sanctuary is truly one-of-a-kind. The centers list of features includes:

HSSV Pet-Friendly Cafe

  • Community Dog Park
  • Affordable Spay/Neuter Medical Center
  • Community Dog Training Center
  • Doggie Day Care
  • Boarding and Grooming
  • Veterinary Clinic with Public Viewing Room
  • Education Center
  • Community Events Room
  • Children’s Programs
  • Pet Store
  • Pet-Friendly Cafe

The cage-free pet rooms will simulate home environments which will help reduce stress and behavioral issues related to traditional shelter environments.

The shelter will be able to handle about 10,000 animal adoptions every year!

“We’re breaking out of the old paradigm of an animal shelter being a warehouse full of cages for unwanted pets,” Benninger remarks.

Think it can’t get any better? Oh it can!

The Humane Society Silicon Valley is also an environmentally sustainable campus!

The animal center is expected to earn a coveted Gold level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Some of the green building features – which allow HSSV to spend less on operational costs and more on the animals – include:

  • An extensive on-site solar system expected to generate 40% of the center’s energy needs from renewable sources
  • A highly efficient kennel cleansing system to ensure proper disinfecting while reducing water use
  • A reflective ‘cool’ roof to reduce solar heating of the building in the summer and lower A/C bills
  • Heat recovery wheels in all HVAC systems to capture and reuse heating and cooling during the frequent air ventilation cycles required to prevent the spread of illness
  • Stained concrete flooring to reduce the amount of chemicals and water needed for cleaning as well as lower power bills by retaining heating and cooling
  • On-site bioswales to naturally clean rainwater run-off before water enters the sewage treatment system
  • Artificial turf and native plants in the dog park areas to lower the demand for irrigation water

“Our sustainable, environmentally friendly Animal Community Center not only promotes animals but showcases the ease and beauty of water savings, energy efficiency and building in harmony with nature,” Benninger explains. “We believe our new center will be an inspiring model of humane care, community involvement and green building design for shelters and non-profits nationwide.”

The Humane Society Silicon Valley is opening its doors on March 28, 2009. If you can’t be there for their exciting and unprecedented opening day, please consider being there in spirit by donating.
