Money is Not Natural

I’ve been discussing money quite a lot with my fiance lately.  These talks have definitely come up due to the economic mess we find ourselves in today.

But we’re not having the same conversations that most people are having right now.  We’re not talking about investments, or real estate, or retirement, or the stock market.

No, we’re discussing the fundamental philosophies behind money, how it rules our lives in every way, and how the greed for it ruins our ecosystems.

We’re trying to dig deeper and have the really tough conversations.

So I thought I’d share some of them with you.

My fiance, Jason, is writing a series on these issues over the next few weeks and posting them to his blog, Money Theory.

Here’s a list of the articles in his series…

I’m currently working on a piece called “Why is it OK to work our lives away?”

So please check back for more in the very near future and please feel free to join the conversation with us by commenting below or on Jason’s blog.

What are your thoughts on these issues?

Do you ever wish that society had never invented money?

Please feel free to post your comments below!

A recent New York Times article points that the retirement fund of solar drying Connecticut. As this occurs, the program has been so successful that no more money to go around. According to the article, since 2005 more than 8.5 million dollars has been donated 815 projects for residential solar heating and 127 companies and government projects. An enormous 300 percent growth spike purchasing systems residential in the second half of 2008, mainly drained all the available funding.

We can find echoes of this sticky situation Florida and New Jersey. During the second half of 2008, more than 3,000 Floridians solar applied to repayment of the state, while 1,300 have been approved, the remaining 1700 are still waiting in the wings. The problem there is no money left. Again, we see the same thing happening in New Jersey, where a plethora of applications has exceeded the redemption price by far.

This is somewhat of a false dilemma because it signals something more profound than legal quagmires. What quality is really standout here is that Americans are more than willing to energy Solar. We do not want to be a nation of eaters oil. Applying for solar rebates is only one of the first steps in the weaning ourselves from oil, which can get quite expensive on more than one level.

Now, the obvious disadvantage is of course cost. Discounts are effective but limited. State support can not go that far. But take a step back. For the moment, solar energy panels are indeed expensive, hence the discount. However, forecasts Look quite pink. May we see a price drop of up to 43% the cost of solar silicon, the material used to manufacture solar panels by the end of the year. Over the next five years we could see even greater reductions, with a price drop of up to 67% silicon. In particularly sunny regions, the cost of energy Solar is at parity with electricity, making solar most affordable.

Thus, although government incentives latency the future of solar power seems sunny.
